Middle School Clubs
At Breakwater School, we encourage students across grade levels to dive deeper into their interests, passions, and curiosities. In addition to Breakwater Enrichment Center classes which offer science, art, sports, and other specialty interest classes to Breakwater and Portland area students after school, we also offer a variety of clubs led by Breakwater faculty that occur during the school day or on early release Fridays.
GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance)
GSA is a club open to 6th-8th grade students that was started in 2016 after many students voiced a desire to have such a club at Breakwater. The mission of the group is to create a safe and inclusive school climate for all students while promoting equality and representation for the LGBTQ+ community. Club members claim a new title each year based on their members - such titles have included RAINBOW and PRIDE CLUB. The club meets weekly during lunch and organizes events such as “GLSEN’s No Name Calling Week” and organizes school community members to march with them in the annual Pride! Portland parade. Students partake in meetings and conversations that teach them to value diversity and practice tolerance and acceptance. To learn more, contact the club’s adviser Kelly
Middle School Rock Band
Middle School Rock Band started in 2007 with the first band being named “Closer to Home.” This club encourages students in grades 5-8 to build teamwork, explore their creativity, practice skills on their instruments, and create music with students across grade levels. Students sing and play a variety of instruments from drums, guitar, ukulele, piano, and violin. They are coached by members of the Enrichment Center Team and other visiting musicians. Student performances occur one to two times per school year. This club meets weekly after early release on Fridays
Original School Musical
Under the direction of our chorus teacher, Stephanie Davis, our original school musical is held every spring. During club meeting times throughout the year, students are hard at work crafting stories, scripts, costumes, and original songs! This club is open to middle school students and is an opportunity to learn and strengthen their public speaking, teamwork, and confidence, in addition to strengthening creative and performing arts skills. Students have a chance in the spring to share their original production in front of peers, friends, and family!
